The Road

I started reading the book, The Road on Tuesday. It looked mysterious enough to pull me in. But initially I was put off because It is depressing and sad and reading it at this time of year made my imagination run wild as I trek to the shuttle in the wee, cold hours of the morning or as I look out at Lake Michigan in its dirty brown and rough winter stage. Yet, I cannot put this book down and It finally occurred to me why; I am hoping for a happy ending and with each turn of the page, with each new struggle of this father and son for survival, I am hoping that it ends well because I am a sucker for happy endings.

What are you a sucker for?

9. A new AA meeting, or an AA meeting in another city.

10. Plenty other stuff--

Oh my. I had the same experience with this book. It is a masterpiece. A chilling, wrenching, unbelievable yet all too believable story. And get this: last night, in between sleep, it came back to mind. There is something so vivid and real about it, especially these days.

And yes, like all things, there is the happiest of unhappy endings, and it is not an ending, but like all things, a beginning. To me, that is the happy ending. All things end, but never end.

I just read this book a couple of weekends ago. and I mean, I started it on a Friday night and finished it on Saturday.
I loved the descriptions and it put me into a "what would I do in that situation" frame of mind. Survival, cleverness, secrecy, morality.
I really loved it with any ending(I won't spoil it).

What am I a sucker for...

The sort of films/stories, where apparently mismatched people (by societal persecption) find a deep connection. Or tales where messed up people find peace.

So yes, Leaving Las Vegas one of those films brings a tear to my eye.

Nevertheless, I do find happy endings kind of a cop out.

Cormac Mccarthy has the most distinctive and unforgettable voice in American fiction right now. I find him difficult and he takes me to dark places -- but such richness.

I read "All the Pretty Horses" by him which was simply one of the best books I have ever read. I did not read that one because it seemed too dark for my mood these days.He is an amazing author! I'm a sucker for icecream!jeNN

This looks like my kind of book - I love to lose myself in the horrid, dark, depressing existences - then finish the book, move on with my real life and take a deep breath.

I loved Angela's Ashes, Glass Castle, and have just finished Like Family.

Interestingly, I wanted to end my own book on a dark note, but every single pre-reader said they couldn't handle the darkness. Now I have a fake, happy ending, that I hate.

When it comes to endings, I'm a sucker for the completely unexpected. An ending that just comes out of nowhere will often inspire to read the whole book again.

What am I sucker for? Rescue animals (ironically every single animal I own besides my huge Fancy Goldfish was a rescue).

The woods and mtn. I find the most delight in taking a roadtrip through all the winding byways into the mtn. surrounded by woods.

The old Childrens holiday specials like, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, The Little Drummer Boy, Santa Claus is coming to town...I have them all on DVD. It brings a smile and kid out in me.

I think above all of these is a tender story of survival, courage and life.

Thanks for the heads up on this book. I will definitely look for it. (Hugs)Indigo

I'm thrilled that you discovered my blog. I'm not sure how you happened upon it the very day that I decided to blog about my addict ex husband...or maybe you've been reading for a while and just now decided to comment.

In any event, everything happens for a reason and our higher power always has a plan. I haven't been to many meetings lately but I'm thinking your blog is a sign I should turn back to program to help me deal with these angsty feelings. Also, writing bad poetry helps. Hee hee.

i too am a sucker for a happy ending.
